Supporting A Good Life for Aotearoa's animals and their people

Providing evidence-based animal care requires a strong evidence base, but generating that evidence isn’t always easy.  We’re here to help with resources to guide you through the process of turning your research ideas into real-world impacts.

We are grateful to the T.R. Ellett Agricultural Research Trust for co-sponsoring these resources.

Research Roadmap

A good research project begins with a good question, but getting from that question to meaningful impact takes careful planning. This section guides you through each stage, including refining your aims, understanding data needs, navigating ethical and practical constraints, and communicating your findings clearly.

Phase 1: Idea Generation

Explore topics, study types, and sources of inspiration

Get an overview of different research areas, common study designs, and where research ideas come from. This phase helps you explore possibilities, spark ideas, and understand the kinds of questions animal health researchers typically investigate.

Phase 2: Question Development

Shape your ideas into a clear rationale and research question

Refine your thinking by identifying the problem you want to address, why it matters, and what gap your project will fill. This phase guides you through writing a focused research rationale and turning your idea into a clear, answerable research question.

Phase 3: Planning

Turn your research question into a well-designed project plan

Select study methods, scope resources, prepare ethics applications, develop surveys and data collection tools, and build your project budget and timeline.

Phase 4: Implementation

Put your project plan into action and collect high-quality data

Recruit participants, conduct fieldwork or laboratory work, set up databases, manage staff and budgets, and keep your project on track as you generate the data you need.

Phase 5: Analysis

Turn raw data into meaningful insights and answers

Clean, validate, and analyse your dataset to uncover key findings. This phase focuses on producing robust, defensible results that address your research question.

Phase 6: Communication

Share your findings with the audiences who need them most

Prepare manuscripts, conference presentations, reports, media releases, and outreach materials to maximise the visibility, accessibility, and impact of your research outputs.

Evaluating Research Studies

Learn more about the research publication process and how to read journal articles with a critical eye if and how the key findings can be applied to your work.

New Zealand Production Systems

Animal populations in New Zealand are shaped by unique production systems, seasonal cycles, and management practices. This section breaks down how each major livestock sector operates and the patterns most relevant to research. These summaries provide the background you need for modelling, data interpretation, and planning research that fits the local context.

Stakeholder Directory

Navigating the animal-health sector is easier when you can see who’s who. This section features a structured directory of New Zealand organisations involved in research, regulation, diagnostics, production, and welfare. Explore the landscape to find collaborators, discover expertise, and build the connections your projects need..
