National Pet Day on 11th April reminds us to spend time every year appreciating the simple joys that companion animals bring each and every day. As pet owners, we understand the importance of the relationships we share with our animals, and we are committed to helping you keep those connections strong in sickness and health.
The Magic Behind Our Mission
Have you ever watched your dog sprint joyfully through a field or seen your cat execute the perfect gravity-defying windowsill leap and thought to yourself: “I’d do anything to keep you healthy”? It is those feelings of love, wonder, and fierce protectiveness that drive our desire to find better ways of providing our pets with the best possible care.
While most pet owners do not need scientific studies to confirm what we already intuitively know—that pets enrich our lives immeasurably through their unconditional love and acceptance—the research evidence increasingly shows just how much the relationships we have with our pets can positively impact our well-being.
Did you know that having a pet can lower your blood pressure, reduce your cholesterol levels, encourage you to move your body more, and even improve your chances of recovering from a heart attack? Or that kids who grow up with pets tend to have stronger immune systems and fewer problems with allergies? Simply stroking an animal works wonders in lowering our stress hormones and boosts feel-good chemicals like oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine.
And the perks of pet ownership extend far beyond just our physical health. Pets are like emotional superheroes, helping us combat feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness that are becoming much more common in the digital age. With a pet by your side, you are more likely to connect with others, stick with healthy routines, and develop a renewed sense of purpose that carries us through the life changes we experience getting older. The lessons that pets teach our children about empathy, responsibility, and emotional intelligence are also ones that can last a lifetime.

With all that pets do for our well-being, one of our core missions at AkoVet is helping owners return the favour by creating resources and tools that make it easy to build personalised care plans for our pets that ensure their physical and mental well-being across their lifespan. This includes making sure our pets have good nutrition, appropriate home environments, preventive health care, and positive interactions with the animals, humans, and objects in their lives.
We are building something special: a future where animal owners, veterinary professionals, and technical experts can seamlessly share their unique knowledge with each other. Why? Because when Bella the Retriever develops a mysterious limp, or Max the Maine Coon suddenly turns down his favourite treat, you should not have to navigate that worry alone.
Bridging the Gap Between Concern and Care
Picture this scenario: It is midnight. Your normally bouncy Border Collie has not touched her dinner. You are googling symptoms, but each result seems more alarming than the last. Pet owners know the feeling well—something seems off with your pet, but it is difficult to determine what action to take. Should you call the veterinarian immediately, or can I wait to see if it improves? Is this behaviour normal? How much is this going to cost? Is my pet going to die?
We have all been there — that anxious space between “something’s wrong” and “here’s what we do about it” — and it is not something you should have to struggle through alone.
As much as we try to prevent medical and behavioural problems from happening in the first place, the reality is that most of our pets will get sick at some point during their life. And we know how stressful this experience can be for you and your pet. This is exactly why we are also working at AkoVet to develop interactive software tools that will help you capture the important information your veterinary team needs to get to the bottom of the problem and walk you through what to expect if you do need to take your pet for a veterinary visit. If your pet is diagnosed with a long-term or serious illness, we also want to help you understand the different options clearly so you can make informed decisions that are in the best interests of you and your pet moving forward.
In the future, instead of that midnight panic, you will have pathways—clear, evidence-based directions developed by people who understand both the science of veterinary medicine and the reality of living with pets who are family.
Building a Future of Collaborative Care
At AkoVet, our vision for National Pet Day extends beyond a single celebration. We see it as a reminder of why we are developing tools to make knowledge sharing easier for everyone involved in animal care.
When we talk about developing evidence-based care plans or co-designing interactive tools, we are talking about honouring those midnight moments when you have checked if your pet is breathing just because you love them that much. We are talking about creating a world where that love is matched with equally powerful knowledge.

So today, while you are giving that extra belly rub or breaking out the special catnip toy, know that the joy you feel is the same joy fuelling our innovation. Your stories, challenges, midnight worries, and morning celebrations are all becoming part of something bigger.
Here are some ways you can help while we are finalising the master plan for getting resources created:
- Become a Pet Detective: Start a “wellness journal” tracking your pet’s unique patterns. Does Thunder the Tabby always sneeze in spring? Does Barley the Beagle get anxious during thunderstorms? These observations will be gold when our diagnostic tools launch.
- Join the Knowledge Revolution: Have you discovered a genius way to get your reluctant dog to take medication? Share it with your pet-owning community! This kind of collaborative wisdom is exactly what our platform will eventually amplify.
- Dream With Us: When you schedule that next check-up, ask your vet what technological innovations they wish existed. Their answer might just inspire our next feature!
- Celebrate the Weird: Does your parrot do a perfect impression of your ringtone? Does your rabbit thump precisely three times before breakfast? These quirks are not just adorable—they are reminders of why personalised, nuanced care matters so much to our mission.

This post beautifully captures how caring for our pets is more than a responsibility—it’s a relationship that enhances our well-being in so many ways. I love seeing science validate what we’ve always felt: that our connection with animals is deeply healing, both emotionally and physically.
Thanks for this lovely message. It is fantastic to hear how valued animals are to people.
